The Process When you place an order with Hanley Millinery Reproduction Company you have become an active participant in the creative process. Hanley Millinery does not keep a warehouse full of mass produced hats to trim and send out. Instead, we talk with you about the item you want us to create. The time period, culture and style, as well as fabric and trims are discussed. Armed with this information, we then research appropriate construction and trimming techniques. You will then be contacted with a quote, at which point a 50% deposit is required to begin construction; the balance is due before shipping. We are able to create a variety of hats including hand pulled felt, wire framed, leather based, hand stitched straw, knitted, crocheted and buckram. All hats will be built using the construction techniques and methods appropriate for the time period of the piece where modern health standards permit. (It is important to note that Hanley Millinery will be using modern, less toxic or non-toxic sizings and glues. There will be no real mad hatters in our shop!) This means that if you order a lady's bonnet dated to 1775, it will be created completely by hand using natural fiber fabrics, just as it would have been back then. The creation of a hat takes 6-8 weeks. Why? This time frame allows for the ordering of specialty materials, fabrics and trims as well as time for creating the hat base, covering it (if needed), and drying time for sizings and glues. Hanley Millinery also builds it's own hat blocks. As a result, we are equipped to recreate hat blocks from museums or private collections, reverse engineer a block from a vintage hat; offer large sizes, and even create round hat blocks for pre-Industrial Revolution headwear. Hanley Millinery Reproduction Company creates fine hats throughout history. We proudly create fancy hats and everyday hats with an attention to detail that will make you wonder "What painting did this piece walk out of?" |
